(In this series of blog posts, we will experiment with longer formats and assistance from generative AI.) In the previous article, we explored four miracles that form the theological foundations of the Old Testament. Together they established the great theological realities that made the coming of Christ intelligible: who God is; man and his fallen…
(In this series of blog posts, we will experiment with longer formats and assistance from generative AI.) Why Christianity Begins Long Before Bethlehem If you ask a contemporary person where Christianity began, they might mention the stable in Bethlehem. Open almost any introductory book on the Christian faith, and it will quickly move to the…
(In this series of blog posts, we will experiment with longer formats and assistance from generative AI.) In our previous two posts, we argued that miracles occupy a surprisingly modest place within the biblical narrative. Although they are central to the Christian faith, they are not scattered evenly throughout history. Instead, they are concentrated around…
Introduction (In this series of blog posts, we will experiment with longer formats and assistance from generative AI.) The term “miracle” is one of the more liberally applied words in contemporary discourse, used to describe everything from remarkable medical recoveries to fortuitous sporting events. However, applying the same terminology to both the resurrection of Christ…
Late last year we published Origin: Why Genesis 1–11 Trumps Secular Accounts. The book attempts something increasingly unusual in the modern world: a discussion of physics, cosmology, biology and history which also treats biblical miracles as real events. This approach was necessary because the Christian faith is inseparable from miracles. In fact, it is not…
Social Darwinism When people hear the term social Darwinism, they often think of ruthless competition and the idea that society should leave the weak behind. But this is only half the story. Many of us in the contemporary West live in post-Christian societies. Beyond declining church attendance, the hallmark of these societies is the loss of Christianity as the source of moral, intellectual and cultural authority. Christian teachings about human nature are now held in derision. Institutions once shaped by Christian convictions now eschew those same beliefs….
In 2024, British Member of Parliament Neil O’Brien published an article to his substack titled The End of Mainstream Christianity in Britain … . O’Brien shared a number of stories and statistics that point to the decline of Christianity in the UK, a trend that he was not comfortable with: Even as an atheist I…
In A Universe from Nothing (2012), physicist Lawrence Krauss makes a striking claim about theology: I have challenged several theologians to provide evidence contradicting the premise that theology has made no contribution to knowledge in the past five hundred years at least, since the dawn of science. So far no one has provided a counterexample….
Geoff and I have just finalised and published Origin. Needless to say, the long months of editing resulted in a fair bit of material floating down to the cutting room floor. Much of it was passably interesting, we felt, even if slightly off-topic, and eventually an oft-heard refrain accompanying the excision of otherwise useful prose…
